Still alive

Post by Day-Z on Wed Nov 14, 2012 12:43 am

A year since the Event. A year since Hell broke loose on the Earth. A year since her life had been turned upside down. The pain in her chest had never gone away, the flicker of hope in her eyes, however... That was a completely different story. She picked up the rounded, cracked mirror and coughed as she opened it. All the dust around her...it was so thick she could draw patterns in it with her finger. It wasn't easy to stay above the dust, but she had managed it so far. It hadn't been starvation or lack of water or even cold that had gotten the best out of the people she had come to know through the months - it had been all the fault of the blasted dust - choking them, draining them of vitality.
My name is... Her mind echoed through the cavity of her skull as her hand trembled. She could see her reflection and the ring around her finger as she held the precious thing. So many memories still tied her to that place, making it impossible for her to move on. She had fiercely defended the area ever since the start of humanity's downfall, but it was becoming harder and harder to bring herself to even want to survive anymore. After all, she was hopeless.

My name is Adara Nigh. She finished and closed the top of the round mirror, clenching it between her fingers as she got up.

Screeching tires, someone was definitely in a hurry. A truck stopped in front of Adara's residence and a shady person, dressed in black, got out from the driver's seat. He made his way to the back of the car and opened the trunk. Despite being rather muscular, he moaned when he picked up the body and threw it at the side of the road before taking off again.

The body was that of Kjolmar Barrow-Delacroix and he looked pale enough for a corpse. Except for one detail: he wasn't dead. Kjolmar slowly opened his eyes and tried to sit up, but he could feel clearly that his body was in a pretty rough condition. His eye sight wasn't flawless at the time either, everything was a bit blurry. He was a sitting duck for incoming attacks.

She heard the approaching car. She shoved the mirror in her backpack, picked it up and pressed her back against the wall next to the window that had a view straight into the street. Gun at the ready. She took in a deep breath. Adara had been chased, cornered, harassed, robbed on more than one occasion, but she had escaped mostly unharmed from all of the confrontations. She didn't take any chances. There was no more room for conversations in her book - whenever she saw an intruder, she pulled the trigger and then asked the questions.

The woman took in a deep breath and tried to block the next cough. It tickled in the back of her throat and made her body spasm weirdly, but she tried to keep her focus. Whomever was driving that car didn't mean to stick around. They dropped something on the floor - a body of a young man as she could make up through the dirty window. She kept well out of sight some time after the car had moved on before she convinced herself to go outside.

As she stepped into the open she aimed her gun around, making sure there was no potential threat coming from anywhere around her, no ambush being expertly set for her. She cursed herself for her curiosity, for that was the reason dragging her out of her hiding place. The only acceptable reasons for going suicidal in such way were food, water and ammo. Any other than that meant getting killed and while she didn't exactly love surviving at that particular moment, she clearly didn't want to die.

Well, curiosity was gone with the wind by the time her brain processed the information gathered from looking at the half-dead man's face. She knew him, oh she knew the guy well. Fear exploded on her face and she muttered something that was anything but nice under her breath because of it. Adara moved fast to his side and placed one arm around him so as to help him out. She kept looking around, every second spent in front of the apartment block getting her closer to a panic attack.
"Just walk. We can do the 'how've you been's when we're not easy targets anymore."

It was awkward hearing her voice after all that time. She wondered how she was still able to do that, she had expected her voice to have deteriorated in the meanwhile. Happily, that hadn't been the case.

Someone helped him up. For a split second, panic ruled his mind. But then again, whoever it was, if the person had bad intentions, things would be over by now. A soft skin, damaged and roughed up by battle but still remarkably soft. This person was female. When she spoke, the voice sounded extremely familiar to Kjolmar, although he couldn't quite place it. His eyesight was still too bad to see shapes, he had to trust on this girl to lead him to safety. During those few seconds they made their way to the building, Kjolmar's mind progressed the voice. No? It couldn't possible be...? Once inside, he fainted again.

Adara dropped the man's body on one of the dusty couches as carefully as possible, although it was no easy feat carrying his weight when she felt so weak. She had to go out and search for provisions soon enough, but she was getting fairly tired of running around, trying to avoid getting killed or caught and dragged to some place that she instinctively hated. There were no refuges around and she refused to buy into any bullshit that other survivors were filling the city with by making use of the hardly working speakers still hanging above the street leading to the boulevard her block of flats was located on.

She took in a deep breath and analyzed the man for a while. He had been a pain in the ass ever since she could remember, but somehow, she felt no anger towards him at that particular time. They had once been friends and her feelings for him had been largely unchanged, although distrust was still an issue to be considered. The water supply was running low, but she still grabbed one of the bottles and using a fairly clean cloth, she began cleaning the man's face. He checked his vitals, checked for fever or rashes, but he seemed fine for now. She would have to observe more when he was awake.

She took a can of Coca-Cola from her backpack and set it down on the small wooden table in front of the sofa. Next to it, she placed a can of red beans and a teaspoon. Considering the situation, that could easily pass for a fancy meal, but she had no problem sharing right then. He could be helpful. And for that he needed strength.

Despite being unconscious, Kjolmar could hear a voice in his head. "System reboot." it said, like it did with a computer. Slowly but surely he started to come back to his senses. First he could move his fingers, then his neck and it was all followed by opening his eyes. For a short second there was something really wrong with his vision, instead of the usual sight, everything around him was blue. Except for a person near him, she was entirely red to his eyes. The vision changed back to normal and Kjolmar blamed the weird scene on head injuries. But when he realized who had helped him, he was in shock. He never thought to see her again so soon, specially not in such circumstances. Then again, perhaps he expected it to be exact in such circumstances. The world was going to hell, of course she had to be there. He got up slowly as to not nerve her senses. He stared at her for a moment before speaking, searching the right words - if there were any right ones.

"Am I dead?"

He left out the part where he wanted to know if he was in heaven or hell, as it would be a terrible moment to make a joke. Besides, his question was real. He started to wonder if he was still alive. The weird vision, the holes in his memory, the sudden silence, Adara being by his side... It was all so unreal.

Adara was not one to lose her composure easily, nor the kind to show emotion in too high a dosage, so when the man finally stirred, it was only her eyes that moved to follow his movements. She gave him time to adjust to his surroundings, sensing something strange about the way he took in the landscape, as though he was completely unfamiliar to the workings of the world. Well, for all she knew, this world could become confusing fairly easily, especially if he had some sort of post-brain damage affection, like... amnesia or something of the sort.

She shook her head 'no', the move itself barely noticeable as answer to his question. "But I had expected you to be." The woman replied, her voice low and as unreadable as her expression. Perhaps she didn't know how to respond to his presence, either. They hadn't seen each other in so long, but it was all a question of getting past the initial shock of being face-to-face once again.
